Confirming earlier rumors, Toyota has announced that the GR Corolla will offer an automatic transmission for the 2025 model year. The hot hatch also receives mechanical updates that enhance torque, upgrade the suspension, and introduce a new top-tier trim level.
While the standard configuration continues with a six-speed manual transmission, buyers who prefer not to shift gears can opt for an eight-speed automatic. This new gearbox is distinct from those used in the GR Supra and GR86, featuring advanced technology that analyzes pedal inputs to determine optimal shifting points.
The powertrain remains a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. While horsepower remains unchanged from the 2024 model, torque increases from 273 pound-feet, aligning the 2025 GR Corolla with the Morizo Edition. Toyota has also added front and rear rebound springs to manage inner wheel lift, revised the rear suspension for improved cornering, and raised the trailing arm mounting point to minimize rear squat during heavy acceleration.
Every 2025 GR Corolla, regardless of trim or transmission, will come standard with front and rear limited-slip differentials. Previously, these differentials were included in the base trim's optional Performance Package and were standard on the Premium and Circuit Edition models.
The 2025 updates also include visual changes designed to enhance functionality. The redesigned front bumper improves cooling by accommodating the radiator, intercooler, brake ducts, a new sub-radiator for 2025, and a transmission fluid cooler that comes with the eight-speed automatic.
Three trim levels will be available: Core, Premium, and Premium Plus. The new Premium Plus model sits at the top of the range and includes features previously found on limited-edition models. It comes standard with a carbon fiber roof panel, a hood with functional vents and a bulge inspired by the Morizo Edition, and flat black-finished wheels.
